It started as an ordinary grocery run. I scanned my items at the self-checkout, grabbed my bags, and was halfway to the door when a woman called after me.
“Excuse me! You dropped this,” she said, holding out my receipt with a warm smile. I thanked her quickly, took it, and left without another thought.
But when I got home and started unpacking the groceries, I noticed something strange. On the back of the receipt, written in rushed handwriting, were the words:
“Check your car.”
My heart skipped a beat. For a moment, I thought it was a prank — but something about the urgency in the handwriting made me uneasy. I slowly walked to my window and looked outside.
There, in the dim light, a man was standing near my car — the same one I’d noticed loitering near the exit when I was leaving the store.
I called the police immediately. By the time they arrived, the man had vanished, but security cameras later confirmed he had followed me from the store and waited near my vehicle for over 10 minutes.
That stranger — the woman who handed me my receipt — might have just saved my life.
